Contemporary painting by Peggy Epner
I paint mainly in encaustic, a medium consisting of natural beeswax, resin, and pigment. Encaustic provides a myriad options for manipulating the surface, to achieve luscious texture and deep luminosity.
Occasionally, I paint with what I call "mixed metals," a combination of reactive metal paints, and oil or acrylic metallic paints, and drawing materials. The effect produced ranges from very matte surfaces to a subtle shimmer that changes with the light.
I worked for a number of years in theatrical costuming before returning to college to study painting. I feel that my design training strongly informs my compositions.
I am a native of Ohio, but now paint in my home studio in Allen, Texas, where I have resided for 17 years. When I can, I love to paint in my retreat studio in the wooded hills of southeast Oklahoma, where I am surrounded by the forest world that inspires so much of my work.
