Artist Statement
Throughout human history, there have been cultures that have regarded trees as having spirits. It is not difficult to imagine why. Trees live, grow, adapt, and die, subject to the same forces of nature that rule humans. I find that I too have a natural tendency to assign human attributes and feelings to trees.
In my evolving visual vocabulary, wood and reference to trees have come to represent the bodies, spirits, and intentions of people. Broken limbs, discarded in heaps. Wooden vessels that contain, or seek to contain. Wooden stair steps that aspire to climb. Age rings which record a history, betray a past.
